Penny press, telegraph and party politics


As American cities like New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington grew different catagories news papers over the country  with those newspapers.  spectacular  printing press, the telegraph, and other technological innovations allowed newspapers to print unlimited copies, boost circulation. In largest cities, some papers were politically independent.  Other word most of them, especially in smaller cities, were closely to the political parties which used  for communication and campaigning. Their editorials explained the party position on all current issues.
The first newspaper on the 20th century style  newspaper was the New York Herald founded in 1835 . It was published by James Gordon Bennett. It was politically independent & became the first newspaper  spot news with regular business and Wall Street coverage. In 1838 Bennett also organized the first foreign correspondent staff in six men in Europe and assigned domestic correspondents  including the first reporter to regularly  Congress.

The leading partisan newspaper was the New York Tribune which began publishing in 1841 .The newspaper was edited by Horace Greeley. It was the first newspaper to gain national prominence by 1861, it shipped thousands of copies in  the daily and weekly editions to subscribers. Greeley also organized a professional news staff and embarked on frequent publishing crusades  . The Tribune was the first newspaper  in 1886, use the linotype machine, invented by Ottmar Mergenthaler  which rapidly increased the speed and accuracy with could be set. It allowed a newspaper to publish multiple editions the same days, updating the front page with the latest business and sports news.]

In  18th century, As the colonies grew new papers appeared  in the cities along the East Coast, usually started with the master printers seeking . Among them was James Franklin, founder of The New England Courant  in 1721-1727  where he employed   younger brother, Benjamin Franklin, as a printer's apprentice. In longly many other colonial newspapers, it was aligned with one interests.  Franklin was first published  his brother's newspaper,  in 1722,  even his brother did not know at first. Pseudonymous publishing represented a common practice of newspapers of that time of protecting writers from retribution from government officials  & others they criticized, often to the point of what would be considered  . The content included advertising of new landed products, and locally produced news  parts those based on commercial and political events. Editors exchanged their papers  frequently reprinted news  from the city contributed .
